Hot Tub Not Heating: What to Check
Before you call, check the settings and the water. Many heating problems come down to low water flow, a dirty filter or the cover being left off.
Electrical safety: the spa's electrical equipment can cause serious injury or death. Before you touch anything near the equipment, turn the spa off at its breaker or disconnect. Do not open the equipment cover, control box or panel. Wiring, breakers, GFCIs, heaters and control boxes must be repaired by a licensed electrician or qualified technician.
If you feel tingling or a shock: get out of the water, stay out, and keep others out. Do not touch the spa or its equipment. For smoke or fire, call 911 first, then call us.
Safe checks you can do
- Confirm the set temperature is above the water temperature, and that the heat or ready light is on.
- Check the water level. It should sit at the level marked on the spa, or near the middle of the skimmer.
- Clean or rinse the filter. A clogged filter cuts water flow to the heater.
- Keep the cover on. Heating takes time, and an uncovered spa loses heat quickly, especially on cool nights.
- In Florida summers the water may already be warm. In cold snaps, heating takes longer.
- Read any error code on the display and find it in the brand guides listed below.
Stop and call us if
- There is still no heat after 24 hours, with the cover on, a normal water level and a clean filter.
- The display shows an error code that repeats.
- You see or smell burning, or the equipment makes buzzing, clicking or crackling sounds.
- The water cools quickly even with the cover on.
Do not
- Do not touch the heater or its wiring to check its temperature.
